Pool Construction

Fiberglass Pools, Installed for the Outer Banks

A fiberglass pool is built in a factory as one solid shell, then delivered and set into the ground in one piece. You get a smooth, colorful finish that's easy on bare feet and hard for algae to cling to.

Four Seasons installs Latham fiberglass pools for homes and vacation rentals from Corolla to Nags Head, including Duck, Southern Shores, Kitty Hawk and Kill Devil Hills, with the same care we put into our concrete pools.

Why Fiberglass

Why Homeowners Choose Fiberglass

  • Smooth Finish

The gelcoat surface is smooth to the touch, with no rough plaster to scrape knees or snag swimsuits.

  • Resists Algae

Algae has a hard time holding on to a non-porous surface, so the pool stays cleaner between visits.

  • Easier Care

Fiberglass pools usually need fewer chemicals and less brushing than plaster pools.

  • Factory Built

Each Latham shell is made indoors under controlled conditions, not exposed to the weather on site.

Installation

Set Right in Outer Banks Sand

A fiberglass pool is only as good as the ground around it. We dig and level the hole, set the shell, then backfill with sand and soak it in with water once the pool is filled, so the sand settles firmly and evenly around the shell.

Water Care

What Water Chemistry Does to a Fiberglass Finish

A fiberglass pool's smooth, colorful surface is a gelcoat finish. When the water is out of balance for too long, especially with chlorine and pH running high, that finish can develop chalking: a pale, hazy white film that slowly dulls the color.

Chalking isn't dirt or calcium scale, so brushing and acid washing won't take it off. Once it sets in, the only fix is refinishing the surface. Preventing it is far easier, and much less expensive:

  • Keep the water balanced all year, not just in summer.
  • Don't over-chlorinate or shock more than needed.
  • Test regularly, or have a pool service do it for you.

Our sister company, Four Seasons Pool & Spa Services, can keep your fiberglass pool balanced year-round. Learn more about preventing fiberglass chalking.

Owner Tips

Protecting Your Fiberglass Pool

  • Never Drain It Yourself

The water inside holds the shell against the ground around it. On the Outer Banks, where groundwater sits close to the surface, a drained or low pool can bulge, shift or even lift. Call us before lowering the water below the skimmer.

  • Keep the Water Balanced

High chlorine and pH lead to chalking, and high calcium leaves white scale. Test weekly and after heavy rain.

  • Use Soft Tools

Use only nylon brushes and soft cloths. No wire brushes, scouring pads or metal scrapers.

  • Mind Sharp or Heavy Objects

Dropping or dragging things across the pool can chip the finish.

  • Winterize Properly

A freeze usually damages the plumbing and equipment, not the pool itself, so close the pool properly each winter.

  • Check Hairline Cracks

Fine "spider" cracks are usually just in the finish, but have them looked at.
